History of Guru Tegh Bahadur ji – Early Life & Background
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was the ninth Guru of the Sikh religion. He was born on 1st April 1621 in Amritsar, Punjab. His father was Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru who emphasized the importance of balancing spiritual life with self-defense. His mother’s name was Mata Nanaki Ji, a noble and kind-hearted woman known for her deep faith and humility.
From early childhood, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji showed signs of calmness, intelligence, and strong spiritual values. He loved to spend time in prayer, meditation, and listening to Gurbani. Even as a young child, he was wise beyond his years.
Along with spiritual education, Guru Ji was also trained in horse riding, archery, and sword fighting. His father personally guided him in becoming both a saint and a warrior. Because of his extraordinary bravery and skills with the sword, he was given the title “Tegh Bahadur”, which means “Brave of the Sword.”
Though he had warrior skills, Guru Ji remained humble, peaceful, and focused on helping humanity. His balanced personality—both deeply spiritual and courageously strong—prepared him to later become a protector of faith and a symbol of sacrifice. He stood up for the oppressed and gave his life to protect the religious freedom of others, earning the eternal title of “Hind Di Chadar” (Shield of India).

He continued the legacy of his father and transformed the Sikh Panth into the Khalsa, the saint-soldier community.
